3 Quick Sewing Organization Hacks You Haven’t Tried Yet

Feb 14, 2025

If you're anything like me, your sewing space is a constant work in progress. No matter how many times I tidy up, fabric scraps multiply, notions go missing, and before I know it, my cutting table has disappeared under a pile of projects.

But over the years, I’ve learned that small, simple changes can make a big difference when it comes to keeping things organized. So today, I’m sharing three quick sewing organization hacks you might not have tried yet!

1. Use a Pegboard for Instant Vertical Storage

One of the best things I ever did for my sewing space was adding a pegboard to my wall. It’s an easy, affordable way to keep frequently used tools—scissors, rotary cutters, rulers, measuring tape—within reach while freeing up drawer space.

🔹 How to Set It Up:

  • Grab a pegboard from the hardware store or a craft store (they come in all sizes).
  • Use hooks to hang your tools, spools of thread, and even small baskets for things like bobbins and seam rippers.
  • Arrange your most-used items at eye level so they’re easy to grab!

Bonus Tip: Paint your pegboard in a fun color to brighten up your space—it’s both functional and decorative!

2. Keep Work-in-Progress Projects in Baskets

I’m guilty of hopping from one project to another, which means I often have half-finished quilts, appliqué pieces, and cut fabric just sitting out. Instead of letting them take over your work surface, try this:

🔹 How to Keep WIPs Organized:

  • Assign each project its own basket or bin (fabric storage cubes work great for this).
  • Keep all the necessary supplies—fabric, thread, pattern—together so you’re not hunting for things when you come back to it.
  • If you need to step away for a while, stack the baskets neatly on a shelf instead of letting them pile up on your table!

Bonus Tip: Label the baskets so you can quickly grab the project you want to work on without digging through everything.

3. Store Patterns in a Binder or File Folders

If you’ve ever printed an appliqué pattern and then lost half the pages, you’re not alone. Keeping patterns organized is key to avoiding frustration (and reprinting the same thing over and over again).

🔹 How to Store Patterns Neatly:

  • Use a 3-ring binder with sheet protectors to keep printed patterns organized.
  • Sort them by category—holiday patterns, appliqué, quilts, etc.
  • If you have a mix of printed and store-bought patterns, use file folders in a drawer or magazine holders on a shelf to keep them easy to access.

Bonus Tip: Keep a notebook inside your binder to jot down project ideas or notes about modifications you made to a pattern!
